The period when Umar ibn al-Khattab converted to Islam.
Why
Umar, while on his way to assassinate the Prophet, found his sister reciting this specific Surah. Upon reading the parchment himself, his heart softened.
Context

Revelation 26: Surah Al-Furqan (25:32)

c. 616-617 CE · Middle Meccan

“And those who disbelieve say, 'Why was the Qur'an not revealed to him all at once?' Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart...”

When
As Quraysh's objections to the message multiplied in the middle Meccan years.
Why
The Quraysh questioned the legitimacy of the Prophet because the Quran was being revealed in short, piecemeal segments, unlike the Torah which they believed was given to Moses at once.
Context
God explains that the gradual, 23-year revelation was deeply intentional: to provide continuous emotional support to the Prophet during hardships and to allow society to gradually absorb and implement the laws.
Significance
Explains the fundamental pedagogical nature of the Quran: it is a responsive, living dialogue with events, not just a static manual.

When
When Quraysh leaders offered a compromise.
Why
They proposed worshipping God for a year if Muhammad worshipped their idols for a year.
Context
A decisive, uncompromising rejection of mixing monotheism with polytheism.
Significance
Establishes clear theological boundaries: 'For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.'

“And he presents for Us an example and forgets his [own] creation. He says, 'Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?'”

When
When Quraysh leaders were confronting the Prophet directly over the resurrection.
Why
A fierce opponent, Ubayy ibn Khalaf, brought an old, decayed bone to the Prophet. He crushed it into dust in his hands, blew the dust into the wind, and mockingly challenged: 'O Muhammad, do you claim God will resurrect this?'
Context
The verse answers the physical skepticism with a logical proposition: the One who created it from absolute nothingness the first time can easily reassemble it.
Significance
A direct, powerful logical refutation of materialist skepticism regarding the afterlife.

Source: Tafsir Ibn Kathir on 36:77-79; some reports name al-'As ibn Wa'il rather than Ubayy ibn Khalaf.

Revelation 30: Surah Al-Isra (17:1)

c. 621 CE · Late Meccan

c. 623 CE · Early Medinan

“And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah.”

When
In the early Medinan years, before the Qibla was changed to the Kaaba.
Why
Reports differ. One narration says companions traveling on a dark, cloudy night could not determine the Qibla, prayed in different directions, and worried their prayers were invalid. Another links the verse to voluntary prayer on a riding animal, facing whichever way it went.
Context
Either way, the verse assures believers that their sincere prayers are valid, because God's presence encompasses all directions.
Significance
Establishes a critical legal principle: sincere intent and effort (Ijtihad) are accepted by God even if the physical execution contains an honest mistake.

Revelation 32: Surah Al-Hajj (22:39)

c. 623 CE · Early Medinan

When
Shortly after the Hijrah to Medina.
Why

Significance
Marks the historical shift from passive endurance to the active defense of human rights and religious freedom.

Revelation 33: Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186)

c. 623-624 CE · Early Medinan

“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.”

When
In the early Medinan years, as the companions asked the Prophet about their relationship with God.
Why
A Bedouin asked the Prophet: 'Is our Lord near so that we should whisper to Him, or is He far so that we should call out to Him loudly?'
Context
God directly answered the question without telling the Prophet to say 'Say:...' (Qul), making it an immediate, intimate response that He is intimately close to the supplicant.
Significance
One of the most comforting verses regarding personal prayer (Dua), establishing an unmediated, direct relationship between the believer and God.

“They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, 'In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people.'”

When
In the early Medinan years, when wine was still permitted and widely drunk.
Why
Companions, including Umar, asked the Prophet for clarity on alcohol and gambling, as they noticed their negative social effects.
Context
This was the first of three stages in the gradual prohibition of intoxicants. It acknowledged some worldly benefit (like trade) but emphasized that the spiritual and social harms outweighed the benefits.
Significance
Demonstrates the Quranic pedagogical method of gradualism (Tadarruj) in uprooting deeply entrenched societal habits.

Why
The Muslims had been praying facing Jerusalem. The Prophet privately longed to face the Kaaba in Mecca, the house built by Abraham.
Context
When news of the change reached other congregations, some of them turned to face the Kaaba in the middle of their prayer.
Significance
Marks the establishment of Mecca as the permanent spiritual center and Qibla (direction of prayer) for Muslims, solidifying their distinct identity.

“They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, 'The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger.'”

When
Immediately following the historic Battle of Badr.
Why

c. 624 CE · Medinan

“It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah's enemies] in the land. You desire the commodities of this world...”

When
Directly after the Battle of Badr.
Why
The Muslims had taken 70 prisoners. The Prophet consulted Abu Bakr, who suggested ransom, and Umar, who suggested executing the leaders to establish power. The Prophet accepted the ransom.
Context
The revelation gently admonished the decision to take ransom (wealth) while the Muslim state was still vulnerable and needed to project decisive deterrence.
Significance
Highlights that early state survival required firm deterrence, and serves as a rare instance where the Divine corroborated Umar's opinion over Abu Bakr's.

“O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying...”

When
Middle Medinan period, after the Battle of Uhud.
Why
Abdur-Rahman bin Awf hosted a meal where wine was served. During the Maghrib prayer, the Imam was intoxicated and severely misrecited Surah Al-Kafirun, altering its theological meaning.
Context
This was the second stage of prohibition. It made it practically impossible to drink throughout the day, as Muslims pray five times daily.
Significance
A strategic step creating a behavioral conflict between the habit of drinking and the foundational duty of prayer.

“So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.”

When
Following the disastrous Battle of Uhud.
Why
A group of archers directly disobeyed the Prophet's explicit orders, abandoning their posts for war spoils, which led to a devastating ambush and the death of 70 Muslims.
Context
Despite this catastrophic insubordination, God commanded the Prophet not to be harsh with them, but rather to forgive them and continue consulting them in future affairs.
Significance
A masterclass in leadership and grace: emphasizing that harshness destroys community cohesion, and mistakes must be met with constructive forgiveness.

“And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.”

“It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering...”

When
Following the siege of Banu Nadir.
Why
The Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir broke their treaty by attempting to assassinate the Prophet (by dropping a boulder on him). The Muslims besieged their fortress.
Context
The tribe surrendered and agreed to leave Medina without a fight, believing their fortresses would protect them, but fear was cast into their hearts.
Significance
Demonstrates the political complexities of early Medina and how divine intervention operated through psychological warfare rather than outright bloodshed.

When
Following the expulsion of the Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir.
Why
Some Medinan Muslim families (from the Ansar) had children who were historically raised as Jews or Christians due to vows made by their parents. When Islam came, these parents tried to force their children to convert.
Context
The verse strictly forbade the parents from coercing their children into Islam.
Significance
The fundamental Quranic decree establishing absolute freedom of conscience and invalidating forced conversions.

Revelation 45: Surah An-Nisa (4:105-112)

c. 626 CE · Medinan

“Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth so you may judge between the people by that which Allah has shown you. And do not be for the deceitful an advocate.”

When
Medinan period.
Why
A Muslim man named Tu'mah ibn Ubayriq stole a coat of armor and framed an innocent Jew. Tu'mah's tribe pressured the Prophet to defend their Muslim kinsman.
Context
The Prophet was inclined to rule in favor of the Muslim based on the deceptive testimonies. These powerful verses were revealed to exonerate the Jewish man and severely condemn the Muslim thief and his lying tribe.
Significance
A towering testament to Islamic justice: truth and justice must prevail blindly, even if it means ruling against a Muslim in favor of a non-Muslim.

“They say, 'If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble.'...”

When
During the expedition of Banu Mustaliq.
Why
The leader of the hypocrites, Abdullah bin Ubayy, tried to incite a civil war between the Medinan Ansar and the Meccan Emigrants (Muhajirun), calling the Emigrants 'the meaner' who should be expelled.

“And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives... and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you?”

When
Following the exoneration of Aisha from the slander (Incident of the Ifk).
Why
Abu Bakr (Aisha's father) had been financially supporting a poorer relative named Mistah. When Mistah participated in spreading the vicious rumor against Aisha, Abu Bakr understandably swore an oath to cut off his charity.
Context
The verse gently appealed to Abu Bakr's higher moral character, asking him to forgive, just as he hopes God will forgive his own sins. Upon hearing it, Abu Bakr wept, said 'Yes, I want God to forgive me,' and restored the charity.
Significance
An emotionally powerful lesson illustrating that true spiritual virtue involves forgiving those who have deeply hurt us.

Why
Two prominent companions fought while drunk, and one struck the other with a camel's jawbone. Umar fervently prayed: 'O Allah, give us a clear ruling regarding wine.'

“O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness...”

When
During the Prophet's wedding feast for Zaynab bint Jahsh.
Why
Some guests lingered at the Prophet's small home long after the meal, casually talking late into the night. The Prophet wanted to retire with his new wife but was too exceptionally shy and polite to ask them to leave.

Why
The Muslims were deeply depressed. They had marched to Mecca for pilgrimage but were blocked by the Quraysh. The Prophet signed a peace treaty with seemingly humiliating, unequal terms (like returning Meccan defectors).
Context
Umar and others were heavily distressed by the apparent weakness. The revelation shocked them by declaring this seemingly bad treaty a 'manifest victory' (Fath Mubin).
Significance
The treaty provided a 10-year truce that allowed Islam to spread rapidly in unprecedented peace, paving the way for the bloodless Conquest of Mecca two years later.

“O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives?”

When
During a domestic dispute within the Prophet's household.
Why
The Prophet used to enjoy honey at his wife Zaynab's house. Out of jealousy, Aisha and Hafsa agreed to tell him he smelled of 'Maghafir' (a foul-smelling flower) when he visited them. Hating to offend, he swore never to drink the honey again.
Context

“Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'Umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them.”

When
Prior to the 'Umrah of Compensation ('Umrat al-Qada).
Why
The early Muslims felt hesitant and guilty about walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa. During the pre-Islamic era, pagans had placed two idols (Isaf and Na'ila) on these hills.
Context
The verse clarified that the practice originally belonged to the Abrahamic tradition (symbolizing Hagar's search for water) and was not inherently pagan. It purified the ritual back to its monotheistic roots.
Significance
Demonstrates Islam's approach to reforming cultural practices: stripping them of polytheism while preserving their original righteous foundations.

“O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection...”

When
Just before the Conquest of Mecca.
Why
A companion named Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah secretly sent a letter to the Quraysh warning them of the Prophet's surprise attack. He did this hoping Quraysh would protect his vulnerable family in Mecca. The letter was intercepted.
Context

When

Why

When
After the grueling Expedition of Tabuk.
Why
Three sincere companions (Ka'b ibn Malik, Murara ibn al-Rabi' and Hilal ibn Umayya) failed to join the army out of procrastination, without a valid excuse. Unlike the hypocrites who lied, they told the Prophet the truth.
Context
The Prophet ordered a strict social boycott against them. For 50 days, no one spoke to them, causing immense psychological anguish, until God revealed their repentance was accepted.
Significance
A profound lesson in the value of absolute honesty, the psychological weight of social ostracization, and the expansive mercy of God.
